HeroBox – Jan 2020 – can be used for HTPC, but has issues for some applications – Makes a decent inexpensive HTPC box. Components dated, but functional.

Ethernet not working. – Problem was the Ethernet cable. – Was very disappointed when, after getting things set up, I realized that the Ethernet did not work. I plugged the cable back into my Raspberry pi that this was to replace and internet worked fine. Returning this because of the non functioning Ethernet. I purchased this as an upgrade to my raspberry pi 4 and was looking for a low power usage computer to act as a htpc. I am not looking to play games and it has no camera (this survey asked me to rate camera quality and gaming experience) It seemed fast enough to surf the internet reasonably. I am not yet decided if I will try another CHUWI HeroBox Mini PC, a lot will depend on my return experience but if I do get another I may update this review. Update- Problem was the Ethernet cable not the Ethernet port. Cable works with other computers but not this one but a newer cable worked just fine. Upgraded my rating from 2 to 4 stars. Nice computer runs windows just fine but is not a 5 star computer. Still nice for a HTPC.

Simple machine good for simple tasks – Bought this for video streaming primarily, and it does a good job most of the time. Occasionally it has issues with YouTube, but that’s about it. The only problem I’ve really had, and the reason for not being 5-stars, is that the WiFi isn’t as good as it should be. It replaced another streaming box that was actually smaller, but would consistently get strong WiFi signals in our playroom, whereas this one sometime has to buffer due to a weak signal. I installed a WiFi repeater in the house midway between this and the router and that solved the problem, but better quality WiFi in this wouldn’t have cost as much as the repeater.

It’s ok, a bit slower than I expected. – It struggled quite a bit as I got all of the Windows updates out of the way (and upgraded to Windows 11). The CPU usage was at 100% the entire time and seemed to struggle. It runs at around 2ghz, occasionally sneaking above 2. I’m mostly using it to stream games via Geforce Now and Playstation Plus and it seems to work reasonably well for those purposes.
